Koehler Award
The Rev. Theodore Koehler, S.M., International Student Award provides a $600 scholarship to a returning international student (with non-immigrant visa). IEP students are ineligible. Award criteria include financial need, a good academic record, and personal characteristics which reflect the Marianist spirit.

The Rev. Theodore Koehler, S.M., International Student Award was established by Prof. Susan L. Tsui of the University of Dayton Libraries, with funds from the Lackner Award which was presented to her in 1995 by the UD Marianists. Her own experience as an international student inspired this award. The Koehler Award is administered by a standing committee of the University of Dayton Libraries.
The Koehler Award is intended to assist international students currently attending the University of Dayton by providing a scholarship. Only international students (with non-immigrant visa) who are returning in the fall are eligible; both undergraduate and graduate students eligible. IEP students and past Koehler award recipients are ineligible.
Father Theodore Koehler, a native of Strasbourg (France), took first vows as a Marianist on September 12, 1928. Ordained a priest in Fribourg (Switzerland) on July 27, 1941, he defended his doctoral thesis in theology in 1942. He taught philosophy in Paris (1942-52), and was spiritual director and professor at the Marianist International Seminary in Fribourg (1954-69). From 1969 to 1986, he was Director of the Marian Library at the University of Dayton, where he also founded and directed the International Marian Research Institute (1974-1986). From 1979 to 1989, he served as executive secretary to the Mariological Society of America and as editor for Marian Studies, the annual proceedings of that Society. He was the author of numerous studies in mariology and spirituality, for which he received various awards. UD bestowed on him an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1987. In retirement (1989 to his death on May 15, 2001), he was an active scholar.
Criteria used in granting the award include 1) financial need; 2) a good academic record; and 3) personal characteristics that reflect the Marianist spirit.
The application has two parts: 1) complete the online form and 2) request a letter of recommendation from a UD faculty member in your area of study. The UD faculty member's recommendation must address the academic and Marianist spirit criteria and be emailed to koehleraward@udayton.edu.
Applications are typically accepted January through February.
