WYNN Software

The University of Dayton offers free access to the network version of the WYNN software from Freedom Scientific. This reading, writing, and studying software can be used in conjunction with your university LDAP log-in information. This program is windows based. If you utilize a MAC, you will have to use a program that allows you to run windows on your system.

As part of this process, you will need to download the software and update your environment variable within your computer. There are also additional voices you can download for free from the Freedom Scientific website. If you are working off-campus, you will need to log-in via the VPN.

Installation Instructions


Perform the following to install WYNN. If you do not know how to answer a question during installation, you can always run the installation program again later to reconfigure your system. 
  1. Open up the zip file and double-click Setup.exe in the list of files.
    Note: You do not need to uninstall an earlier version of WYNN before installing this version. WYNN 7 can co-exist with the earlier version.
  2. Follow the installation instructions on your screen.

    2. Choose to install WYNN Wizard. It offers OCR ability
    3. Choose what localized language to install.  In version 7.0, the choices are US English or UK English.
    4. d. Choose whether to install the Public Domain books.  You can copy more than 200 books in the public domain by famous authors.  The majority of these books appear in required reading lists for high school and college students, as well as being listed among various posting of the top 100 books of all time. Other books in this collection are included because they are the writings of famous authors, or they are the books that continue the story of another famous book. 
  3. Next, the setup program installs the RealSpeak Solo Direct speech synthesizer. It contains different voices for you to use as WYNN speech. Note that the Web download version does not include all the voices that are included in the disk installation. You must accept the End User License Agreement (EULA) to continue installation.
  4. After installing the synthesizer, WYNN software installation begins. You must accept the EULA agreement to continue installation. The setup program continues and installs WYNN based on the options you previously selected. Follow the installation instructions to complete installation.
  5. Update the environmental variables (see steps below)
  6. When installation is complete, start WYNN by clicking the WYNN shortcut on the Windows Desktop.

Environment Variables

For Windows 7/Windows 8, do the following:

1. Click the Start button, right-click Computer, and choose Properties.

2. In the left pane of the System dialog box, click Advanced System Settings.

3. In the Advance tab of the System Properties dialog box, click Environment Variables.

4. Select the New button that appears in the System Variables area, and then enter LSFORCEHOST in the Variable name field and the server name "wynnls.servers.udayton.edu" in the Variable Value field. Click OK to close the dialog box and save the changes.

For Windows XP, do the following:

1. Click the Start button, right-click My Computer, and choose Properties.

2. In the System Properties dialog box, select the Advance tab, and choose the Environment Variables button.

3. Select the New button that appears in the System Variables area, and then enter LSFORCEHOST in the Variable name field and the server "wynnls.servers.udayton.edu" in the Variable Value field. Click OK to close the dialog box and save the changes.

On this website you can sample the voices and download and exe file. Once you execute the file, it will show up in your WYNN software.
