Marianist Religious Life

Could Marianist religious life be for you?

Marianist religious - the Brothers and Priests (the Society of Mary) and the Sisters (the Daughters of Mary Immaculate) - are religious especially dedicated to continuing Mary's Mission in our world.

Mary is our charism, our gift.  She is our mother and we are her missionaries.  Her mission is our mission:  to witness, form, and transform.

Witness:   Mary’s entire life was about bearing witness to God’s Love in Jesus.  Her soul magnified the Lord.  At Cana, she drew attention to Jesus and His disciples began to believe in Him.  At Calvary, while those disciples fled, she stood by Him in His suffering.  Through our common vowed life of faith built around prayer, we try to bear witness to the Presence of Christ in our world today.

Form:  Mary formed, fed and taught Christ as His Mother.  Later, she formed his apostles and their communities, praying with them for the coming of the Spirit.  Through education, faith formation, leadership development, and the animation of Marianist Lay Communities, we help form apostles and communities of faith on fire for the Gospel.

Transform:  In her Magnificat, Mary sang of a world transformed:  the rich and powerful are emptied and brought low while the hungry and humble are filled and exalted. Building community on a systemic level, we seek to transform society’s unjust structures.  With the Holy Spirit, we labor to transform our world so that it more fully resembles God’s kingdom of peace and kinship.

Discernment Opportunities

Discernment Retreats

Discernment retreats offer an opportunity for young adults to learn more about Marianist religious life, pray, discuss and relax in a peaceful atmosphere for a weekend. There is no cost for attendance at the retreats which take place at the Marianist retreat facility on Governor's Island. These retreats are offered once a year.  For more information about the retreat, please contact Sr. Nicole Trahan, FMI (ntrahan@gmail.com).

Discernment Evenings

Twice a semester the Marianists host a discernment evening on a Friday night for anyone who wants to discern God’s call and is open to religious life. Discernment evenings include prayer, a meal, reflection and discussion.    For more information or to RSVP, please contact Bro. Tom Pieper, SM.

Spiritual Direction

As people discern how God is calling them and how God is working in their lives, it is helpful to have someone with whom to walk the journey. A spiritual director serves as someone who listens and helps a person discern God's actions. If you are interested in meeting with a spiritual director, please contact Sr. Nicole Trahan, FMI (ntrahan@gmail.com).
