Step 2: Complete a Marriage Preparation Program

Six to nine months before your wedding

As you begin this journey towards the Sacrament of Marriage, it is important to spend some time discerning and preparing for the lifelong commitment you are about to make.

Marriage Preparation should consist of the following:
  • Several meetings with the priest who is to witness your marriage
  • Obtaining recently dated baptismal certificates from your church of baptism
  • The use of pre-marriage inventory like the FOCCUS as a guided discussion instrument specifically catered to the needs of the participants
  • Participation in a parish or diocesan marriage preparation program such as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter
  • The completion of the Marriage Record Form (M-1 Form) by the priest or deacon witnessing your marriage. This completed form must be submitted to UD Campus Ministry one month prior to any wedding liturgy.
  • When one of you is not baptized or Catholic, the necessary permission or dispensation must be given in the diocese where the Catholic is now living. UD may not request this for persons not living in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. The priest who is marrying you should request this on your behalf.

Most priests require that you contact them at least six months before the wedding date so adequate preparation may take place.
