Former UD Priest Dies at Age 79

The Rev. Richard Knuge worked from 1986 to 1991 in development, counseling and career placement.

The Rev. Richard Knuge, S.M., a former University of Dayton priest and Miami Valley Hospital chaplain, died Saturday, Aug. 6. He was 79.

Knuge will be buried at Queen of Heaven cemetery Thursday, Aug. 11, following a 6 p.m. viewing and 7 p.m. funeral Mass at the Mount St. John Queen of Apostles Chapel, 4435 E. Patterson Road, in Dayton. A reception at the Bergamo Center on the Mount St. John campus will follow the burial.

Born April 3, 1926, in Dayton, Knuge graduated from Chaminade High School in 1943 and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in education from UD in 1947. Six years after his ordination in 1956, Knuge received a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Cincinnati's Xavier University.

Knuge worked for nearly 30 years in secondary education, including stops at Hamilton (Ohio) Catholic High School and Purcell and Moeller high schools in Cincinnati. In 1977, he became director of the Marianist Mission in Dayton, a fund-raising organization for the Marianist order. From 1986 to 1991, he worked in development, counseling and career placement at UD.

Knuge served as Miami Valley Hospital's chaplain before entering semi-retirement at the Meyer Hall community at Mount St. John in Dayton.

He is survived by his sister, Dolores Owens, of Xenia; three nephews, David, Derrick and Michael Wheeler; a niece, Angelia Owens; and an aunt, Lucille Moore, of Beavercreek.
