Community Ambassador

Tim Bete, director of the popular Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, has been named a "community ambassador" by the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Tim Bete, director of the University of Dayton's Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, will be among eight "ambassadors" honored by the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau at the 15th Annual Community Ambassador Awards Breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Dayton Marriott Hotel.

"It's a privilege to recognize these individuals at our awards breakfast and present each winner with a leather flight jacket…as a token of our appreciation for the positive economic impact their events have on our community," said Jacquelyn Y. Powell, president and CEO of the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop is believed to be the only workshop in the nation that focuses on humor and human interest writing. The workshop has brought many celebrity speakers to Dayton, including Dave Barry, Art Buchwald, Nancy Cartwright, Jill Connor Browne and Phil Donahue. Bombeck's family has attended all four workshops, held biannually since 2000. Her son Matt, who is a television writer, also has been a speaker.

In 2006, the workshop was a sponsor of the ThinkTV documentary, Erma Bombeck: A Legacy of Laughter, which aired on more than 270 public television stations across the country. More than 300 writers from more than 40 states and Canada attended the 2006 Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, which sold out in 12 days and had 250 people on a waiting list. One of the workshop's strategic partners is the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

This year's winners also include Phil Anders (Dayton Juniors Volleyball), Peggy Cullins (509th Parachute Infantry Battalion), Ray Joiner (Ray Joiner Design), Barbara King (Wilberforce University Alumni Association), Derric McDonald (Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, Inc.), Brenda McGowan (American Legion Department Convention) and Lutricia Valentine (United Conference for Women).
