A Season of Reflection

The University of Dayton is holding services and events throughout Lent to help people observe this time of repentance and renewal.

The University of Dayton welcomes students, faculty, staff and the Dayton community to the campus for Ash Wednesday observances and throughout the season of Lent.

"People often think of Lent as very somber and all about penitence," said Emily Strand, UD's campus minister for liturgies. "It is about penitence and taking a hard look at our lives, but also, a huge element is preparation for the renewal of our baptismal vows at the same time we're inducting new people into the church."

Traditionally, people give up something during Lent, but Strand said she has noticed students want to do more.

"There is a growing awareness that just giving something up like chocolate or Diet Coke is not the best way to prepare for renewing your baptismal vows," she said. "A lot of students give up buying something they don't really need and donate the money to a charity or church."

Other Lenten suggestions include:

  •  Invite a friend to come to Mass with you.
  • After sharing in a Mass or Lenten program with a friend, go out   for a bite to eat and talk about your response to the program.
  • Make a point of praying specifically for another's need or concern.
