Campus Report April 16, 2008

Gifts provide funding and support for some of the University's needs and Annual Giving's co-chairs hope faculty and staff realize the difference their contributions make.

When faculty and staff receive their annual fund appeals in the campus mail next week, the campaign's co-chairs are hoping people realize the difference their contributions make.

Every year, gifts from the faculty and staff help provide funding for UD's immediate needs as well as support to scholarships, professional programs, departments and athletics, said Deb Bickford, co-chair of the faculty-staff campaign and associate provost for academic affairs and learning initiatives.

"As faculty and staff we already support the university daily through the fruits of our labor," Bickford said. "This campaign request asks us to give in a different way. We are called to invest in ways that extend our impact on the campus and beyond. ... By contributing, you are sending the message loud and clear that you care deeply about the initiative, the institution and its people."

The goal, naturally, is 100 percent participation from faculty and staff, said Bickford, who directs her annual gift to the Leadership UD Scholarship Fund.

"I love contributing to the fund because it combines so many of my personal and professional values and interests," she said. "The fund was created by two women who were in the same Leadership UD cohort together — Kathy Harmon and Gwen Klemmer. ... Contributing to this fund gives me the chance to feel that in some way, I am acknowledging the importance of leadership, even as I support students who have demonstrated and shared their leadership gifts with others."

Every gift makes a difference, said political science professor Chris Duncan, co-chair.

"But it's more than just the dollars. When we have strong participation in the annual fund, it shows that we as a community believe in the mission and vision of UD and are committing both our labors and our money to advance the University."

Pledges and gifts to the annual fund can be returned through postal or campus mail; they can be paid by check, cash, credit card, salary reduction or payroll deduction. Donors may also give online at SupportUD. Further details will be provided in the information packets.

"Your gift every year makes a difference every day."
