New Leader for Marianist Universities

In 2010, Father John McGrath, S.M., succeeds Brother Raymond L. Fitz, S.M., as executive director of the Association of Marianist Universities.

UD religious studies faculty member and Marianist will take leadership Jan. 1 as executive director of the Association of Marianist Universities.

Father John "Jack" McGrath, S.M., assistant professor of religious studies, succeeds Brother Raymond L. Fitz, S.M., UD's Ferree Professor of Social Justice and the association's first executive director, said Charles Cotrell, president of St. Mary's University and the chair of the organization.

"We are extremely fortunate to have someone with Father Jack's academic background and leadership experience within the Society of Mary to take on the leadership of the association at this time," Cotrell said.

The Association of Marianist Universities is a collaborative effort of Chaminade University of Honolulu, St Mary's University and the University of Dayton to promote information sharing, mutual enrichment and development, and shared learning on the Marianist tradition of higher education.

McGrath has served in various leadership positions within the Society of Mary, including service as provincial of the New York province from 1977 to 1985. He's been a member of the UD religious studies faculty since 1987.

He has a doctorate in systematic theology from the Catholic University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and a doctorate in historical theology from University of St. Michael's College, Toronto.

"I am very glad to have this special opportunity to help deepen our commitment to the Catholic and Marianist mission of the universities and to assist at their greater collaboration," McGrath said.
