Zipping Right Along

Car-sharing network Zipcar is coming to the University of Dayton.

Two Zipcars — a Ford Focus and a Toyota Prius — located near RecPlex will be available for round-trip use 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to adult students, faculty and staff.

Members of the University of Dayton campus community can join for Zipcar for $15 for the first year, with rates for Zipcar vehicles on campus starting as low as $7.50 per hour and $69 per day. After the first year, the annual membership fee increases to $35. Gas, insurance and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in Zipcar rates, and cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for several days.

"Zipcars can be an alternative to bringing a car to campus, which can lower vehicle emissions and reduce the University's carbon footprint," said Kurt Hatcher, University of Dayton environmental sustainability manager. "Other benefits for students using Zipcars rather than bringing their cars to campus include not worrying about damage to their vehicles or additional wear and tear."

Members with smartphones can download the Zipcar mobile app to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles, and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle. Reservations can also be made by phone or on Zipcar’s website.

"The Zipcar program on campus gives students, faculty and staff the freedom of using a car without the hassle of owning one," said Katelyn Bushey, Zipcar director of university sales. "We're happy to partner with the University of Dayton to give their community a transportation option to fit their needs and their wallet."

With the new Zipcar program on the University of Dayton campus, student organizations can participate in the Students with Drive grant program. Sponsored by Zipcar and Ford Motor Company, the program provides students with Zipcar memberships and driving credit to support student organizations on campus.

Zipcar has established relationships with more than 500 universities across North America. Additional information and promotions can also be found by following @ZipcarU on Twitter.
