Update July 20, 2018

The University of Dayton shared this message with the campus community:

We are delighted to share the good news that President Emeritus Dan Curran has been discharged from the hospital and continues to recover from the liver transplant he received in April. As his recovery continues, his family is elated to report that he is doing well and is getting stronger every day.

Dr. Dan and his family express their deepest thanks to the UD community for the prayers, emails, cards, drawings and outpouring of support. These expressions of concern, caring and encouragement buoyed Dan's spirits and no doubt played a major role in his healing.

Dan also wants to convey his deep gratitude and appreciation for the excellent care he received from the doctors, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and staffs of the Penn Transplant Institute at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.

Dan and his family ask for continued prayers of gratitude and condolence for the donor and the donor's family. And Dan is looking forward to coming back to campus in the not-too-distant future to say thank you in person.

Dear faculty, staff and students,

Across his 14-year presidential tenure, during the presidential transition, and since that time, it has been clear that President Emeritus Dan Curran feels a deep and profound affection for the University of Dayton and each member of our community. I ask you all to join me now in returning that deep affection with your thoughts and prayers for Dr. Dan and his family.

After a decade of successfully managing liver disease, our friend and colleague Dr. Dan is in need of a new liver. Thankfully, he is currently receiving excellent care at one of the best transplant centers in the country. Although he is not up to taking calls, checking emails, or receiving visitors at this time, prayers and words of encouragement and support from the University of Dayton community are most welcome.

To show Dr. Dan that we are with him during this time of challenge, we will be collecting and forwarding cards to him. Please send cards or letters to:

If you would prefer to send an email, please direct your messages to President18@udayton.edu; all messages will be aggregated and sent to him.

While we will not be sharing further information about his health at this time, if you would like to learn more about organ donation, please visit organdonor.gov. We will remain in touch with Dr. Dan and his family and make the community aware when appropriate of any changes in his health.

Most importantly, please join me in praying for God’s healing grace to be bestowed upon Dr. Dan, and for his and his family’s peace of mind and comfort.

With prayers for Dan,
Eric F. Spina
President
