Pray, Fast, Give: Lent 2019 at the University of Dayton

University of Dayton Campus Ministry encourages all to "Pray, Fast and Give during Lent," which begins Ash Wednesday, March 6.

"During the season of Lent, we make an effort to open wide our hearts and commit to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent is a time for us to really examine how we are living as disciples of Jesus, with one another, with our community, and with God. Even small intentional commitments can bring about big impacts," said Crystal Sullivan, University of Dayton executive director of campus ministry.

The University of Dayton will mark the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday Masses at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Liturgy of the Word with distribution of ashes will also be available at 7 p.m. in the Adele Center McGinnis Room. A nondenominational Christian worship service with distribution of ashes will take place in Marianist Hall at 5 p.m.

In addition to Ash Wednesday Masses, University of Dayton Campus Ministry will offer the following free, public activities during Lent, which runs through Wednesday, April 17.

  • Stations of the Cross will be observed at 3:30 p.m. March 29, April 5 and April 12 in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Romero Stations of the Cross will be observed at 3:30 p.m. March 22; these will begin in the Nazareth Courtyard outside St. Joseph Hall.
  • During Lent, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. There also will be a Taizé reconciliation service at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Taizé refers to the reflective music style of the monks of Taizé, France.
  • Liturgy of the Hours will be prayed at vespers (evening prayer) at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday throughout Lent in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception beginning March 13 until April 17, with bilingual prayer (English and Spanish) on March 27.
  • Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception from 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Fridays. This is ongoing, but will not take place the week of March 11.

This Lenten season, Campus Ministry and the Office for Mission and Rector also will be collecting money to send to Marianist programs overseas — health clinics in Togo, West Africa and India; and Marianist schools in India, Kenya and Malawi. Each serves the needs of the poor through education, encouragement and meeting basic needs.
