NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR ON RACE, IBRAM KENDI, TO SERVE AS UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE 

New York Times bestselling author and founding director of The Antiracist Research & Policy Center Ibram X. Kendi will serve as the University's Inclusive Excellence Scholar-in-Residence Sept. 16-17. Kendi will give a free, public talk followed by a book signing at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Kennedy Union ballroom and conduct a faculty and staff forum related to his book "How to be an Anti-Racist" 8:30 to 10 a.m. Sept. 17 in Kennedy Union 222. He is the author of The Black Campus Movement, which won the W.E.B. Du Bois Book Prize, and Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction. The University's Inclusive Excellence Scholar Residency explores how diversity, equity and inclusion is fundamental to advancing the University's Catholic and Marianist mission. It focuses on creating cultural intelligence and awareness of different identities and their significance in higher education. AN EVENING WITH OHIO SUPREME COURT JUSTICE MELODY STEWART

The University of Dayton School of Law, Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Women's Center will welcome Ohio Supreme Court Justice Melody Stewart to campus at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, for a conversation about her journey to Ohio's premier judiciary. The free, public talk will be in the Kennedy Union Ballroom. Judge Stewart made history in November when she became the first African-American woman elected to the state's Supreme Court. She will provide a glimpse of the resilience and determination she used to break barriers in reaching this career milestone. When she began her new role, Judge Stewart told Court News Ohio, "If it paints a picture in the mind of someone who came from the background that I came from, or who looks like me, that this is what our justice system should look like, this is a job that I can aspire to have one day, then that's a great thing." UPCOMING UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS 

Emerging Leader Program 

Employers can help develop future executive leaders with training on the finer points of leadership and business skills during the 2019 Emerging Leader program at the University of Dayton Center for Leadership. Registration is open for the next 12-month, 17-session program that begins Jan. 23, and are geared toward helping employees chart a path to executive leadership. Presenters include faculty from the University of Dayton's School of Business Administration along with consultants to Fortune 500 companies. The Emerging Leader Program is open to the public and costs $13,000; $12,000 for partner organizations. Participants receive a certificate in leadership and admission to two of the Center's future executive development programs.

Supervisory Leadership Certificate Program

The Center for Leadership is accepting applications for the session of this 10-session program that starts Sept. 26. The Supervisory Leadership Certificate Program is a development program spanning six months for leaders in public, private and not-for-profit organizations. This program will assist front-line leaders or anyone preparing for a leadership role in developing skills to help them maximize individual and team performance. Upon completion of the program, they also receive two additional days of Supervisor and Professional Development programs. The cost is $4,300; $4,000 for partner organizations. Supervisory Leadership Certificate facilitators average a 4.62 on a five-point scale in participant reviews. Participants in the most recently completed cohort report a 43.5 percent increase in their competency level. One participant said: "I have found most valuable the ability to listen to and to be exposed to individuals from all over the region, as well as to be able to share in their insights and gain an appreciation for the similarities and differences among us."

Professional Development Programs    

 

Aug. 27: "Strengths-Based Leadership." This session will help participants define the benefits of focusing on their strengths, explore how strengths impact decisions and utilize strengths to fulfill the basic needs of employees.

Aug. 28: "Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team." Participants will learn the five behaviors of a cohesive team, gain tools and strategies to use in the five areas and identify individual action steps they will take to lead a more productive team. 

Sept. 4: "Navigating Difficult Conversations." This interactive workshop helps participants build strong communication and conflict resolution skills plus understand the casualties of unresolved conflict — productivity loss and employee turnover, among others.

Sept. 5: "Time Management and Personal Productivity." This session will help with establishing and scheduling priorities, navigating common productivity obstacles and engaging others productively.

Sept. 17-18: "Project Management Essentials I & II." This program focuses on the practical skills, tools and techniques used to effectively manage all phases of a project — initiation, planning, execution and closing. Participants will work on a practical case study project in small groups to clarify the project's goal and objectives, identify deliverables, create a work breakdown structure and build a schedule. 

Sept. 18: "Leading Change at the First Level." Leading major change is not the same as leading day-to-day operations. In this program, participants will explore the patterns that differentiate great change leaders, focusing on the complicated role of the front-line leader who must follow and lead simultaneously.

Sept. 19: "Leadership is Everyone's Business." Participants will discover how they have shown leadership to meet business and personal challenges, allowing them to gain the confidence and skill to increase their use of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders.

Sept. 24: "Communications Skills for Leaders." Participants will gain tips to establish goodwill and motivate audience action, organize content strategically for optimal audience engagement, and increase presentation confidence through audience analysis and preparation.

Sept. 26: "Leading the New Workforce: Filling the Cross-Generational Gap." Participants will gain an understanding of the cultural and generational shifts in the workforce and learn how to engage employees and build organizational culture.

Oct. 3: "Navigating Difficult Conversations." This interactive workshop helps participants build strong communication and conflict resolution skills plus understand the casualties of unresolved conflict — productivity loss and employee turnover, among others.

Oct. 9: "ADVANCED Project Management." Participants will apply essential project management skills and tools to real project situations. 

Oct. 9: "Making a Positive Impact on Customer Relationships." This program will share how to make a positive impact on internal and external customer relationships. Focusing on the importance of building relationships, participants will learn how to sustain attentiveness to internal and external customer service and to overcome barriers for positive relationships.

Oct. 10: "Project Leadership." Participants will learn how to identify, communicate with and influence stakeholders; develop a productive project team; and make effective project decisions.

Oct. 10: "Design Your Life." Participants will explore what drives their sense of purpose and how their work aligns with their view of the world. They'll also gain insight and discover ways to make meaning within their current roles, and develop practical skills to tackle complex, open-ended challenges encountered in most of today's professions. 

Oct. 15: "Going from Peer to Supervisor." This program will guide new supervisors through the transition from individual contributor to leader. Through small group exercises, group discussion and role playing, participants also will learn strategies, behaviors and critical interactions that lead to becoming an effective supervisor.

Oct. 16: "The Art of Influencing Others." Participants will learn the styles of influence, identify the role of connections in influencing others and learn the five steps that help persuade others.

Oct. 22: "Coaching and Evaluating Performance." This session is designed to enhance management skills and prepare participants for the changing demands of today's workforce. Participants will learn concepts and skills to develop the skills of staff members or correct performance issues. 

Oct 23: "The Power of Positive Workplace Politics." In order to become politically effective, one must understand politics is a reality in every organization. This session will help you determine the level of your tendencies in organizational politics, learn 10 keys for being politically effective and develop a plan to manage your political equity account.

Oct. 24: "Essential Problem Solving for Team Leaders: Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt." Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to lead Lean Six Sigma problem solving teams through the five-step Lean Six Sigma Problem Solving process.

Oct. 30: "The Intentional Leader – Self & Team Development." Participants will gain awareness of their current state of energy and how they react under normal and stressful situations based on their customized Energy Leadership Index Assessment. They also will learn the seven levels of energy in leadership and their impact on effectiveness.

Nov. 5: "Time Management and Personal Productivity." This session will help with establishing and scheduling priorities, navigating common productivity obstacles and engaging others productively.

Nov. 6: "Professional Communication & Presence." This session will help professionals create awareness of how image influences perception and its relationship to professional advancement, understand nonverbal communication and business technology and the message it conveys to others, and apply dining etiquette standards and tips to positively impact work and social engagements.

Nov. 7: "Effective Decision Making." This seminar utilizes group exercise, movie clips, real-world examples and case studies to help participants analyze and improve decision-making skills.

Nov. 14: "Leading Yourself to Outstanding Results." Participants will challenge assumed constraints that limit growth and productivity and activate their points of power to accept responsibility.

Nov. 20: "Communications Skills for Leaders." Participants will gain tips to establish goodwill and motivate audience action, organize content strategically for optimal audience engagement, and increase presentation confidence through audience analysis and preparation.

Nov. 20-21: "Advanced Problem Solving for Team Leaders: Lean Six Sigma Green Belt." This session will help participants gain basic knowledge and skills to lead effective problem-solving teams; understand the five-step Lean Six Sigma problem-solving process called DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control); and understand when and how to use problem-solving tools and techniques.

Participants will learn a more clear, constructive approach to accountability and how it contributes to individual responsibility, empowerment and better results. They'll also learn how to evaluate the frequency and consistency of their own accountability behaviors, and determine actions to better model and inspire more accountability throughout their teams. 

Dec. 4: "Leadership is Everyone's Business." Participants will discover how they have shown leadership to meet business and personal challenges, allowing them to gain the confidence and skill to increase their use of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders.

Dec. 10: "Navigating Difficult Conversations." This interactive workshop helps participants build strong communication and conflict resolution skills plus understand the casualties of unresolved conflict — productivity loss and employee turnover, among others.

Dec. 11-12: "Project Management Essentials I & II." This program focuses on the practical skills, tools and techniques used to effectively manage all phases of a project — initiation, planning, execution and closing. The cost for a professional development program is $395 for the general public, $345 for University of Dayton alumni and $299 for center partners.

Sept. 25: "The Heart of Leadership: How Leaders Engage with Emotional Intelligence" by Melvin Smith, faculty director of executive education and professor of organizational behavior at the Case Weatherhead School of Management. 

Oct. 8: "What Got You Here Won't Get You There: Leadership Strategies for Developing Yourself" (morning) and “Stakeholder Centered Leadership: Leadership for the Future” (afternoon) by Marshall Goldsmith, two-time Thinkers 50 No. 1 Leadership Thinker in the World, Inc. magazine's America's No. 1 Executive Coach, and The New York Times bestselling author of more than 35 books.

Oct. 29: "Communication That Works: Three Habits to Influence Others & Make Things Happen" by Connie Dieken, Global Gurus Top 10 Executive Coach, best-selling author of Talk LessSay More and Become the Real Deal, and Council of Peers Award for Excellence Speaker Hall of Fame inductee. 

Nov. 13: "Corporate Athlete® Resilience: Stress Smarter, Recover Better, & Be Your Best" by Natalie Johnson, nationally recognized expert in employee well-being, fitness and nutrition, Fortune 100 consultant, and health coach and sports nutritionist.

The cost for executive development programs is $995 for the general public, $945 for University of Dayton alumni and $897 for center partners.
