Government Relations

The University of Dayton is actively involved in the surrounding local government and thriving cities throughout the Dayton area. We make it a point to stay up-to-date on local issues and aware of legislation impacting the Dayton community. As a University, we take pride in the fact that local leaders are also our friends and neighbors. We work together as UD supports the community and vice versa.

UD colleagues are respectively asked to coordinate university-related conversations with elected officials' offices with the Government Relations Director, Ted Bucaro (229-4158) or the appropriate Research Institute colleague. Any conversations with elected officials concerning personal matters or those not related to the university require no such coordination.

By supporting and maintaining our relationships with our state public officials and their staffs, the University’s government relations office is able to stay up-to-date on legislation that impacts our University, the city of Dayton, higher education and elections. We network with Dayton alumni working in state government, and attend state meetings and events with state officials.  And, as the state’s largest independent university, we are an important and active advisor on state education issues.

The University’s government relations office knows the importance of staying educated on current federal legislation and its impact on our University and higher education in Ohio and the United States. That’s why we continue to foster relationships with federal officials by hosting their visits to campus and attending meetings, conferences and events with them to show our dedication. The University also makes our own visits to Capitol Hill to keep up with elections, current events and to network with our own Dayton alumni working in Washington D.C.

The University of Dayton has numerous opportunities for students to get involved in government organizations on campus, in the Dayton community and throughout the state of Ohio. From campus to Capitol Hill, students can build their professional experiences and develop toward their careers through internships and summer programs. Interested in working side-by-side with government officials, executive agencies, faculty and University of Dayton alumni?

One of our responsibilities at the University of Dayton, as a Catholic university, is to engage people around difficult questions of faith and culture. Here at UD, we welcome open dialogue and encourage students, faculty and staff to become involved in the political process through educational events on campus such as voter registration drives, candidate debates and other voter education activities. This involvement in the political process is part of our steps to create a broader educational experience for students.
