Marianist Leadership Scholars Program Expectations
Students who participate in the Marianist Leadership Scholars Program are asked to meet certain expectations while at the University:
- Attend monthly meetings planned by the MLS Coordinator and MLS Team
- Attend a yearly retreat with the MLS community
- Participate in one MLS-sponsored service project each semester
- Involve oneself in a chosen leadership position at the University of Dayton
- Maintain a 3.0 grade-point average each semester
- Complete a minimum of 10 hours of service each semester
- Participate in community building activities
- Re-apply yearly based on above expectations
What you need to know about being a Marianist Leadership Scholar:Who can apply?
Students from any of the 17 Marianist Education Consortium schools in North America and Puerto Rico.
Students from international Marianist schools may apply but are not guaranteed acceptance into the program.
Students from non-Marianist high schools, who participated in the South, Pacific, or Central LIFE programs may apply.
Students must be graduating high school seniors, applying for acceptance into the program for their first year of college.
When are applications available?
The application process begins on January 11, 2016 and may be submitted through February 16, 2016. Two recommendation forms, found on this website beginning in January, must be submitted or postmarked by Feb. 16.
What if UD offers a student a full tuition scholarship or tuition remission?
Students who receive a full tuition academic scholarship may only receive an additional $1,000 from MLS. Students receiving tuition remission from a parent who is employed by UD may receive a portion of the scholarship to cover tution costs not covered by tuition remission.
What is the application and communication timeline?
- Jan. 11 - Application website opens
- Feb. 16 - Application website closes at midnight
- March 24 - Application notifications / scholarship offers mailed
- May 1 - Outstanding offers expire Aug. 15 and the MLS first-year class is finalized.
Here's how to apply:
There are three requirements to the application to become a Marianist Leadership Scholar.
First, fill out and send us the Marianist Leadership Scholars Application Form online (available Jan. 11).
Second, you will need two forms of recommendation (submitted by using our online form or sent via mail and date stamped by Feb. 16).
One recommendation will come from a teacher, administrator, or counselor. The second recommendation will come from a community, parish, or school organization where you have led or served.
Please ask those who are submitting a recommendation for you to fill out the online Marianist Leadership Scholars Recommendation Form (Available Jan. 11).
The third requirement is a 250-word personal essay.
We suggest completing the information off line. When you have finished, insert your information in the online application form in one sitting. Once the application is submitted, you will not be able to change it.
