Blended Learning Format Description

Blended learning design employs a variety of methods to meet participants needs for consistent, high quality instruction and accurate information. To help participants acquire new information, build correct psychomotor skills and develop decision making and problem solving skills, a variety of interactive activities are integrated into lessons along with video and skill demonstrations, skill sessions, traditional lectures and guided discussions. Guided discussions and activities are designed to correspond to the course objectives.

ONLINE LEARNING PORTAL

This is a 7-hour course that needs to be completed prior to in-person classroom and skill sessions. It can be stopped and saved as needed, and is most successful when completed on a computer rather than a phone or tablet. Participants will be emailed a direct link to the registration portal upon completing a Preskills course.

Participants are required to bring a hard copy of the Online Learning Completion Certificate with them to the Friday session of in-person instruction. Failure to provide this verification will result in the participant not being permitted to continue with the Lifeguarding course. No refund will be provided by UDCR or the American Red Cross.

VIDEO DEMONSTRATIONS

Video segments are shown in both the online learning and in-person skill sessions and are designed to enliven the program by conveying key concepts and providing uniformly consistent explanations and demonstration of skills.

IN-PERSON CLASSROOM AND SKILL SESSIONS

This portion spans three (3) days of scheduled time over a weekend and will include both classroom and in-water sessions. Each day of the course will meet promptly at the following times:

  • Friday: 5:30pm-8:00pm
  • Saturday: 9:30am-7:30pm
  • Sunday: 11:00am-7:30pm

Certification Course Registration

Participants will not be registered for a certification course until a Preskills has been successfully completed. Upon passing the preskills, participants will receive a registration form for the lifeguarding course to process at the RecPlex Welcome Desk.

Once registered for the Lifeguarding Course and at least a week prior to the first in-person skills session, an email will be sent to the email account provided on the form. Please keep this in mind and provide the best email to send that communication to on your registration form.

The link will take you to the American Red Cross online learning portal where the participant will need to create an account unique to them as the participant. This account is linked to a particular participant name and American Red Cross only allows one email account per person/name. So, if an email account was already used for another family member, they will not be able to utilize that same email for their account as well.

In the best interest of your child, the University of Dayton has established the following minors policy. Please click here to review this policy before registering for any preskills or lifeguard course.

COURSE ATTENDANCE POLICY

Being on time is a critical component of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course. Class will begin promptly at the scheduled time. Participants must be present prior to the start of the course. Any participants not there at the start of a class session will not be able to continue in the program and no refund will be provided. Participants must be actively engaged in all scheduled time and successfully complete all required components in order to pass the course.

It is necessary for the Aquatics Director to properly plan for the number of participants scheduled for each course. With this in mind, the following refund policy has been developed by UDCR administration:

  • Refund request made 30 days or more prior to the first day of the course will be refunded in full minus a $10 administrative fee.
  • Refund request made 29 to 11 days prior to the first day of the course will be refunded at 50% minus a $10 administrative fee.
  • Refund request made 10 days or fewer prior to the first day of the course will not be given. Illness, injury, or other extraneous circumstances documented by a physician or accredited third-party representative may be directed to the Aquatics Director for consideration of a refund. These requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis and may or may not be awarded.
AQUATIC CENTER AND FACILITY USE

The Aquatic Center is available for open swim only to those who are current members of UD Campus Recreation. The same policy stands for the RecPlex as a whole.
