Lifeguard Courses

Are you interested in becoming a lifeguard?

Many pools require lifeguards to become American Red Cross certified prior to employment. University of Dayton Campus Recreation is offering a lifeguard training course this spring through which you can obtain Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification. Upon successful completion of both in water and classroom portions of the lifeguarding course, participants will receive a Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate and a CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certificate valid for two years. Follow these steps to become a certified lifeguard through University of Dayton Campus Recreation!

  1. Select a date and register for preskills
  2. Successfully complete the preskills
  3. Register for the respective Lifeguard Course
  4. Successfully complete the Lifeguard Course
  5. Become certified!

Note: Participants must pass all written tests with a grade of 80% or better and successful completion of all skills tests in order to obtain certification.

Prerequisites/Skill Requirements

  • Participants must be at least 15 years of age prior to the final day of the course. Parent signature is required for participants under the age of 18 years old.
  • Participants will be required to pass the American Red Cross lifeguarding prerequisites prior to beginning the course. They should take time prior to the start of the course to practice and prepare. Participants are required to swim 300 yards alternating front crawl and breaststroke. There is no time limit for this portion, however they cannot stop at any point. Participants are also required to complete a brick retrieval skill. Starting in the water, they will swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on their back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within one minute, 40 seconds.
  • Participants that do not pass the prerequisites will not be permitted to continue any further in the course. A participant must pass all written tests with a grade of 80% or better and successful completion of all skills tests in order to obtain certification.

Registration Details

Registration is open until the registration deadline or until the course is full. Register in person at the UD RecPlex Main Office or Welcome Desk. Participants must complete the registration form and present a photo ID with birth date of the participant at the time of registration. Additionally, if the participant is under the age of 18, a Minors Emergency Medical Plan will also need to be on file. The Minors Emergency Medical Plan is valid one year from the date of submission.If a photo ID is not available, you must present official documentation that identifies the participant's age. Participant must bring photo ID or official verification to the first day of class.

To register, bring the completed form and copy of ID to the UD Campus Recreation RecPlex or you can fax your registration form and copy of ID to 937.229.2703 and pay via credit card. Payment may be made via cash, check, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

All participants must purchase a copy of the 2012 edition of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual is available to view online at americanredcrss.org if you would like to review prior to the first day of class. It is required that they bring their manual to class each day. Laptops are not permitted during class.
