Party Tips

Stay in Control

The UD alcohol policy specifically states that you can receive "disciplinary action" if you drink so much that you lose motor control, pass out, or become destructive or violent. To avoid finding yourself in violation of the alcohol abuse policy and/or the disorderly behavior policy, limit how much you drink. Know how much you can drink and still keep your senses.

Wait Until You're 21

Regardless of whether you believe the legal age limit for alcohol consumption should be 21, 18, or non-existent, you have a much greater chance of getting in legal trouble if you consume alcohol before you are 21. State law prohibits those under 21 from consuming, purchasing, or even possessing alcohol beverages. Violating this law means committing a first-degree misdemeanor, which could result in a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail. You also violate state law and UD policy if you misrepresent your age in any way in order to obtain alcohol. It is also illegal to provide alcohol to someone who is under 21.

Keep Your Alcohol Contained

Beer kegs are not allowed within the UD campus area, nor are "beer bongs or any other devices that are used to artificially increase alcohol consumption." UD policy also prohibits distributing mixed alcoholic beverages from a "common source other than the original packaging." Keeping within these laws is also safer for you; it's not smart to accept an open container of alcohol, particularly from someone you don't know or if a drink was mixed by someone else.

Be Cooperative

If a police officer or RA asks for your ID, breaks up a party you're at, or gives you a citation or write-up, this is not the time to argue. If you feel you have been treated unfairly, check out the Community Standards and Civility Web site for more information on the proper way to handle the situation. This is another reason to control your alcohol consumption; you will be less likely to act in a way you regret if confronted by a police officer or RA.
