Information for New Undergraduate Students

When do I move in? 

New first-year students move in to their residence halls on Friday, August 18 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for Marycrest and Stuart Halls, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. for Founders and 2:30 - 4 p.m. for Marianist Hall.  It is strongly recommended to arrive earlier rather than later.

Does the University insure my belongings while I live in University-owned housing or do I need my own insurance coverage?

Students agree to assume and bear the risk of loss with regard to all personal property kept or maintained in all University housing facilities. Students are encouraged to purchase renters insurance or pursue coverage under his/her parents’ home owners insurance as the University does not carry insurance covering any such loss to personal property and assumes no responsibility for the payment of any such loss or damage.

How do I get to Dayton and find my residence?

Links to directions and maps are on our website. Once on campus, volunteers will be on hand to direct students to residence halls.  Be sure to follow the signs, and be aware that GPS devices aren't always accurate on campus.

Do I have to move in during the assigned move-in time?

Yes!  It is very important to move in during this time frame so students and family members can be on time to their first Orientation session.

What happens if I arrive on campus after 3 p.m. on August 18?

Proceed to your residence hall as directed on the maps and consult the Orientation schedule to join the event that is taking place for students and/or families. Please realize that there is not as much move-in assistance offered after 3 p.m.

Are there any rules for vehicles on campus that day?

Yes – families are strongly encouraged to only bring one vehicle to campus.  Students using U-Hauls or other oversized vehicles will be directed to park and unload in alternate locations by a move-in day volunteer. 

What will my room/residence hall be like?

How can I purchase my textbooks?

How should I pack? 

Volunteers will be helping you move your items in to your room, and because many other students will be moving in at the same time, it's a good idea to mark all belongings with your name, room number, and residence hall.  Be sure to have all small items boxed for easy transfer.  There is no storage available in the residential buildings, so items should be packed in cardboard boxes that can be recycled, or in soft, foldable luggage that can be easily stored in a closet or under a bed.  Stackable crates and organizers that fit under the bed can also work well.

Where can I put boxes and trash I have after moving in?

Every residence hall will have a trash dumpster outside. Stuart's will be outside in the back by the sand volleyball court. Marycrest's will be outside in the circle off the ground floor. Founder's will be outside near the residence's area and Marianist's will be behind the post office loading dock. 

Once my son/daughter is moved in, where can I park my car? 

You can park your cars in the S1 lot at the Fitz Hall building, located at the intersection of Stewart and Brown Street. 

Where are the shuttle stops located?

Shuttle stops will be located behind Marycrest, behind Stuart, in the Fitz Hall lot, and at the intersection of Kiefaber, Evanston, and Stonemill (near the front of the Rec Plex.)

How long will the shuttles be running?

The shuttles will run until 11:00 p.m. on August 18.

Is storage space available?

Not on campus.

How can I mail items to my student's residence hall?

You can mail items to your student by one of two ways. Click here for suggestions on how to mail items to your student via U.S. Postal Service or DHL, FEDEX or UPS. 

What will I be expected to do on Opening Day?

Visit the New Student Orientation section of the New Student Programs website for a complete schedule of New Student Orientation.

Where do I get my Flyer card?

If you've already sent in your picture to have your card made, you will pick it up when you check in to your residence hall. If you still need to have your picture taken, you can do that at the Powerhouse from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m on Friday, August 18, 2017.

Where can I get computer help?

The UDit help desk is located in Anderson Hall in room 28.

What are the bookstore hours for orientation weekend?

Please check back for the hours of the bookstore for Orientation Weekend. 

When and where is the President's Welcome?

The President's Welcome is at the RecPlex and will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017 

When does my meal plan begin?

Meal plans begin on Friday, August 18. Your University of Dayton student id serves as your meal card so it is important that you have it with you for all meals. More information about meal plans and hours can be found here.

Where can I get food on campus?

There are 3 dining halls available to you: Marycrest on the first floor, VWK, and in Kennedy Union. The Emporium is located next to the bookstore in Marianist Hall and has quick snacks and a deli. Also, Stuart's Landing on the 1st floor of Stuart is a convenience-type store. You can also go to Brown Street where you'll find a variety of restaurants. 

How long should my parents/family plan to stay in Dayton?

UD’s opening Orientation activities include events for parents and families through Noon on Sunday.
