New Student Orientation

Think of it as "University of Dayton:  101"

Whether you are leaving home for the first time or transferring from another university, the transition can be exciting and challenging for everyone involved.  The Orientation experience at UD allows you to make friends and have fun while preparing for academic engagement and success.  New Student Programs has designed an orientation program to meet the transitional needs of each of the undergraduate populations of students we serve.  To learn more about the orientation experience awaiting you, please select from one of the following student populations/admission categories and then follow the appropriate link in the navigation box on the left.

First-year Student:

Freshmen are called First-year Students here at UD.  UD's first-year class is composed of domestic and international students and the vast majority will live on campus.  There are a small population of commuter students who live at home and commute to campus from a short distance away.

  • Fall Admittance:  If you were accepted to start classes in the fall semester then you are required to attend the fall orientation program which is called New Student Orientation or "NSO" for short.  If you are a fall admitted first-year student then click the New Student Orientation link to learn more about NSO.
  • Spring Admittance: If you were accepted to start classes in the spring semester then you are required to attend the spring orientation program which is called "January Orientation".  If you are a spring admitted first-year student then click the January Orientation link to learn more about the blended orientation program.

Transfer Student:

Transfer students are students who join the UD family after having attended another school or university.  Like first-year students, you are required to participate in an orientation program. However, because you have attended some college prior to arriving at UD, you have the option to choose between one of two orientation experiences to complete.

  • Fall Admittance: If you are a fall admitted transfer student then click the Transfer Student Orientation link to learn more about your fall orientation options.
  • Spring Admittance: If you are a spring admitted transfer student then click the January Orientation link to learn more about your spring orientation options.

Parent and Families:

The orientation experience for parents and families members is linked to the orientation experience of your student.  To learn more about parent and family orientation, select the appropriate population of your student by clicking either the New Student Orientation, January Orientation or Transfer Student link.

International Student:

The Center for International Programs (CIP) is the primary contact and point of service for all international students at UD.  However, international students who are classified as first-time, first-year students (Freshmen) are required to attend NSO in addition to any other transition programs required by CIP.  If you are an undergraduate first-year (non IEP) international student then click the First-year Student link to learn more about NSO.  If you are any other type of international student then click the International Student link to be directed to CIP's website.  If you are not sure of your exact international student status, please contact the Center for International Programs for assistance (937) 229-3514.

Graduate Student:

Graduate Student Orientation is handled by UD's Graduate School.  For detailed information please contact the UD Graduate School for assistance (937) 229-2390.
