Second Year Checklist

Your second year in college offers exciting opportunities.  Academically, you may start to take classes that explore your major in greater detail.  You probably have a good sense of campus life, but there still may be more areas to explore and leadership opportunities.  Check out these tips from the Office of Student Success and Parent Engagement, and contact us at to learn more about creating an individual success plan.


Do you understand the academic requirements of your major, and what to expect with regard to classes for upcoming terms?  If not, make sure you touch base with your academic adviser.

Still thinking about other majors?  Have you considered adding a minor or do you want to learn more about double majoring?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, start a conversation with your academic adviser.

Did you know DegreeWorks on Porches offers a "What If" tool for you to explore different academic curriculums?

Consider studying abroad.  If you're interested, stop by the Center for International Programs office for detailed information.

Take advantage of all tutoring available in sophomore level classes.  Check out services offered through the Office of Learning Resources.

Build your resume!  Learn how to enhance your major through co-op and internship opportunities with the help of Career Services.

Thinking about graduate school?  Now is a great time to consider research in a specific discipline.  Ask your favorite faculty member for advice.

Get involved in activities related to your major.

Make sure you understand what courses and grade point average are required for your major.

Has your contact information changed?  You can update this through Porches.  It's important that the Registrar's Office has the correct information.


Up the Orgs isn't just for First-Years!  Find and join an organization that matches your interests with Student Life in KU's Community Software.

Participate in at least one organization that supports your major/career interests.

Consider your interests and commit to leadership opportunities that support you on a deeper level.  Leadership involvement could include active membership in organizations or also taking on an executive role with the organization.  Reflect on your values and passions.

Consider your service opportunities for the year and be involved in as much as your schedule allows.

Did you know that the University of Dayton's Campus Ministry offers over ten retreats?  If you haven't gone on a retreat yet, this would be a great year to try it out!

You've probably heard of semester abroad programs, but did you know that UD offers a semester of service through the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community?

Not sure if you can commit to a huge project?  Not a problem, Center for Social Concern offers day and half-day one time service activities.  Great way to meet new people!
