Enabling Systems to Achieve their Objectives with Less Data

UDRI’s Information Processing and Compression (IPC) researchers provide comprehensive data processing and compression solutions that span the remote sensing application space. Our subject matter experts (SMEs) conduct valuable research in data compression algorithms and their consequences on data exploitation. We also actively research hyperspectral image exploitation, polarimetric imaging, and embedded image/video applications. Our IPC research primarily benefits United States government customers such as the Air Force, but also supports industry and commercial partners as well.

Capabilities

  • MPEG-2, H.264, and H.265 (HEVC) video compression expertise within industry and government standards
  • JPEG2000 and other still-image compression expertise
  • Flexible and scalable embedded image and video compression solutions
  • Compression solutions to minimally impact typical computer vision and exploitation end-uses
  • Compression research for other ISR data payloads
  • Low cost, size, weight, and power (C-SWAP) image processing and computer vision solutions
  • Hyperspectral image processing and exploitation
  • Polarimetric image processing and exploitation

We test, integrate and improve data compression algorithms developed by other contractors, specifically for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and hyperspectral imaging (HSI). In addition, we work to enhance the quality and usability of hyperspectral imagery, including supporting the design and test of new sensors from various vendors.

Our vision-aided navigation (VAN) efforts seek to allow small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to navigate themselves visually in the absence of GPS signals, using machine learning algorithms to recognize terrain features in live video data. In addition, we improve and enhance underlying radar processing algorithms (image formation) for SAR sensors.
