Back of the Front: The War Behind the War

Thursday, October 15 - Sears Auditorium, 3:30 - 5:00PM

Many people think of World War I as having a “home” front and a “battle” front with clear lines dividing them. This lecture by Dr. Tammy Proctor will explore the shadowy and less-known world between the lines, where men and women worked in espionage, humanitarian aid, medical services, and hard labor. From Chinese male civilian contractors to Italian female porters, personnel of all ages and backgrounds inhabited the “back of the front” and made a modern war like World War I possible.

Sponsored by the History Department, Alumni Chair in Humanities, International Studies, and the Women's & Gender Studies Program.
