Chemistry

Countless Opportunities

In addition to our rigorous academic program, students are provided with many opportunities to work side-by-side with faculty on research projects such as developing improved flame retardants, studying biodegradation of polymer coatings and discovering new photodynamic lung cancer treatments. Recent graduates are employed as scientists in academia, industry and government, or pursuing postgraduate education.

Student Spotlight

Reed Dowling enjoys majoring in chemistry at the University of Dayton because it offers the opportunity to work one-on-one with his professors. “My favorite thing about the major is being able to talk to my professors whenever I would like to, email them about questions, and be in such a small niche group that I feel like I have my own family here at UD.”

High-Quality Education

Choose a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts Degree Funding Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Opportunities for Cooperative Education

Our students follow their vocation and choose the path best suited for them. A Bachelor of Arts degree is less mathematically demanding than the B.S. programs and allows students to take courses in the humanities and social sciences to supplement their chemistry studies. Students in the Bachelor of Science track will engage in original research opportunities.

Support for undergraduate research includes the Honors program, College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Summer Fellowships, Integrated Science and Engineering Summer CoRPs and the Berry Summer Thesis Institute. Our department has the longest standing undergraduate research program at UD.

Qualified students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree may participate in cooperative education after completion of their sophomore year.

Bachelors Plus Masters Program

The BPM degree option allows undergraduate students majoring in chemistry to obtain both a bachelor of science and a master of science in five years. The undergraduate degree is earned in the first four years, with the master's degree being earned in the fifth year. BPM students are charged at the regular undergraduate tuition rate for their first four years, and are offered the discounted graduate tuition rate for the 24 semester hours of graduate coursework. During M.S. degree completion, several paid teaching opportunities are available.

Hands-on Learning Opportunities

Whether students are in upper-level teaching laboratories or individual faculty research laboratories, they gain hands-on experience with modern chemical instrumentation as they study research problems. Some research projects result in student-authored publications.

Experiential Learning

Real-World Experience

Through practical learning opportunities like internships and co-ops, you can build your resume, gain practical experience and prepare for a successful career.
