Time for a pop quiz. Name one thing you can use in all aspects of college life — taking notes in class, gathering research in the library, hanging out in your room, relaxing in Humanities Plaza and staying connected with friends and family. Stumped? It's a notebook computer!

All UD students are required to have a notebook computer that meets certain hardware and software requirements. You may purchase a preconfigured notebook through HP or bring your own notebook computer — as long as it meets the minimum requirements for the University's network and your major.

The HP model selection and major specifications listed below are for students entering in spring 2010 and may change for students entering in fall 2010. Updated specifications for students entering in fall 2010 will be available in March.

UD-HP Notebook Computer
To make meeting the computer requirement as simple as possible, we recommend purchasing a UD-HP notebook computer. Purchasing one of these computers ensures you meet the required specifications of your major, plus it will be fully supported on campus through walk-in help desk services, phone call center support and all hardware warranty services.

Other Notebook Computers
Maybe you already have a notebook computer — or you want to browse the models at a local computer store. No problem. As long as the computer you select meets all of our minimum requirements, it should work on our network.

Computer requirements may vary depending on your major, so make sure to closely read what specifications are required for your academic program. For more information, download the minimum requirements for new computers (PDF) or existing computers (PDF).

If your major requires use of Windows XP or Vista operating systems, you are required to have a traditional, Windows-based notebook. An Apple notebook running Windows as dual boot does not meet this requirement.

If you bring a new or existing computer, you will have to work directly with your reseller if you experience any software and hardware issues. Make sure you know the manufacturer warranty options for your computer, as well as how you will receive support when you are on campus.

Our on-campus team will try to assist you with network connectivity and may be able to help with some computer-specific software issues, including drivers and operating systems, but fees will apply.

Software
As a UD student, not only will you receive a top-tier education, but you will also have access to all the tools you need for success. Once you arrive on campus, you'll be able to download and install a variety of software applications — for free! So don't worry about using your graduation money to purchase software like Microsoft Office or antivirus protection; wait until you get to campus and see what's available!
