Sue Coe (British, contemporary)
Belfast
Newspaper reproduction process on intaglio plate with stamps and pencil; 1979

Coe is a political artist of the left who rails against what she perceives as the evils of our time with an evangelical fervor.  She is long on grievances but short on cure.  Coe's moralistic sense of indignation nevertheless comes from the shards of a crumbling Judeo-Christian (Biblical) worldview.  Coe's print cycles are the heirs of German Expressionism both politically and artistically.  The complete cycle from which the prints in this exhibition come are now in the permanent collection of the Museum of American Art, Washington.
