Mechanical Engineering Student 2024 John E. Riley Award Recipient

UD's Division of Student Development has selected Liesl Carter, a mechanical engineering major from Centerville, Ohio, as the recipient of the John E. Riley Award. This award recognizes a junior student who has exercised sustained leadership through involvement with student initiatives, exemplifying the educational and service values of the University and Marianists.

Carter has served as a consultations coordinator and project lead for Diversity Peer Educators, arranging and delivering Diversity 101 training workshops to various organizations across campus. She is a trip leader with the Outdoor Adventure Club and retreat leader for the Faithful Ally retreat. Carter has served as a project leader for an ETHOS project and with the biomechanics research lab, fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion within the field of biomechanics.

Margaret "Mo" Burke, Beth Hart and Sabina Marroquin nominated Carter for the Riley Award.

“Liesl exemplifies leadership, service and the Marianist Charism in her consistent push for inclusivity on UD's campus,” said Burke, assistant director for global engagement. “Kind in nature, Liesl spends her free time dedicating herself to learning and advocating for underrepresented identities.”

Other Riley Award finalists include Jenna Anderson (civil engineering), Ella Donnelly (psychology/women’s and gender studies), Mary Koonce (middle childhood education/ intervention specialist), John Rosch (pre-medicine) and Khloe Young-Neawedde (political science).

All students will be recognized at an April 15 reception.
