UHP Spotlight on Our Two New Stellar Student Workers

By Tara McLoughlin

This year, the University of Dayton Honors Program has begun to invest in recruiting and retaining honors students. To do our best to support our fabulous honors students and make people aware of some of the incredible programs we have to offer we instilled some help from the students themselves. Read about our two new student workers Ikeyaira Metcalf and Lonnie Fleming, and learn exactly what they do and how thrilled we are in the Honors Program to have some new stellar student workers to help aid in the future of the UHP.

First, we have Ikeyaira Metcalf, a junior studying Political Science & International Studies with minors in  Pre-Law & Spanish. She is from Englewood, Ohio and when asked why she applied to work for the Honors program she said it was “because I love the people within the office and have always felt welcomed when stopping by. Once I learned there was a position available I jumped at the opportunity to spend more time with them! I have loved the conversations I’ve been able to have with other staff members and growing our relationships.” Ikeyaira is one of our past DC Flyers participants and it is one of her favorite memories here at UD, which she now gets to promote to other students in the Honors Program.

Next up we have Lonnie Fleming. Lonnie is a sophomore Biochemistry major with a minor in Spanish from Dayton. He has a deep passion for the UHP and is ready to get to work on planning some of the awesome events for our students. One of the many reasons he loves the UHP is because of its exceptional resources and dedicated staff members. With signature programs like the Chaminade Scholars Program and perks such as priority honors class scheduling and the opportunity to write an Honors thesis, the UHP offers unparalleled opportunities for students. For him personally, experiencing the enriching environment of the UHP, he was compelled to join as a student worker to contribute to its excellence. Working alongside supportive staff members like Dr. Dorf and Gina Lloyd has deepened his love for the department. He is grateful for the invaluable experience and sense of belonging the UHP provides.

This dynamic duo has a lot of creative and exciting ideas for our honors students, the first of which is a “UHPizza Social” before the week of finals. There will be food and opportunities to relieve stress through fun, light-hearted activities. They will also plan some reunion nights for all the cohorts of DC Flyers, London Flyers, etc. to come together and have fun!

Keep an eye out for these epic emails and announcements of events soon and if you have any questions or would like to reach our new workers in the meantime you can email Ikeyaira at metcalf1@udayton.edu and Lonnie at fleming19@udayton.edu!
