Description: Garden Station is a quirky and vibrant art park and community garden that has a “permaculture and reuse emphasis” for their projects. They feature murals, sculptures, community garden plots, concerts, bonfires, drum circles, festivals, markets, and movies. Every first Friday of the month they host free live music. This urban garden is a great place for a picnic or just to hang out!

Description: This 41.1 mile trail extends from just north of Piqua to just south of Middletown and is smooth the whole stretch. The ride is beautiful, easy to follow and safe. The trail is in close proximity to campus and there is a bike trail where the sidewalk of Stewart Street that allows students to safely get from campus to the Great Miami River Bikeway.

Description: If you're looking for a beautiful place for a run or picnic, Hills and Dales is it. Easily accessible bbike from campus, Hills and Dales has great picnic shelters, gorgeous trees that change to vibrant colors in the fall, and a Patterson statue with a fantastic view of the valley.

Huffman MetroPark

Description:  Located about 15 minutes from UD, this MetroPark includes a 3 mile trail that offers the opportunity for hiking and wildlife/bird watching. A picnic shelter and other picnic sites are available for events, and fishing is allowed in the lake or river. MoMBA (MetroParks Mountain Bike Area) offers a stacked loop system of bike trails for both beginners and more experienced mountain biking enthusiasts. The top of the Huffman Dam gives a beautiful view of the Dayton skyline, adding to why this park is worth the trip.

Description: This 33-acre MetroPark is an urban oasis conveniently located in downtown Dayton and perfect for community events, picnics and family fun. This park includes a bandshell, multiple picnic areas, a water play/playground area, and plenty of green space. Also, over 2 miles of trails are available for walking, skating, running and bike riding.

Shafor Park

Description: As Oakwood's largest recreation complex, this park includes 3.3 acres of playground, a small ball field, a half basketball court, six tennis courts, and an outdoor pool. This park is only a short drive from campus and has plenty of green space!

Description: This small urban park situated on a high bank above the Great Miami River offers scenic views of the river and the City of Dayton and includes a wildlife viewing area. The park is located above the Great Miami River Recreational trail, which travels both north and south along the river’s edge and is ideal for walking, skating, running and bike riding. Fishing is also allowed on the Great Miami River for those who have an Ohio Fishing license.

Description: Located at the edge of the North Student Neighborhood, Woodland Cemetery is one of the nation's five oldest rural garden cemeteries and a unique cultural, botanical and educational resource. The roadways through the cemetery are perfect for running or walking, and Lookout Point marks the highest elevation overlooking the city of Dayton. Picnic to Wegerzyn MetroPark

Introduction: If you are looking for a relaxing afternoon outdoors and away from campus, a picnic to Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark with your friends could be just the thing!

Description: This group picnic will begin with a bike ride to 2nd Street Market, where you can purchases locally-grown fruits, vegetables, or other picnic foods for the afternoon. Once you have assembled your picnic menu, you will be on your way to Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark for enjoyable afternoon. Wegerzyn Gardens Metro Park has picnic tables but it also has plenty of green space to roll-out a blanket. After all the food is gone, you and your friends can enjoy a stroll through the gardens and trails before you head back to campus.

Dinner in the Oregon District and a Movie at The Neon

Introduction: A classic outing with Dayton charm!

Description: To begin your outing, bike, drive, or take the Dayton RTA to the Oregon District, located on 5th Street in Dayton. Street parking is available throughout the district neighborhood as well as Oregon District lot parking. From here, you can grab dinner at a number of different quality restaurants - we recommend Thai 9, Lucky’s Taproom and Eatery, or 5th Street Wine and Deli. Browse the various record, fair trade, and thrift shops until your showtime at The Neon! The theater is a short walk from the Oregon District and has plenty of local and unique refreshments to enjoy during the movie!

Adventures at RiverScape MetroPark

Introduction: Warm or cold weather, RiverScape has it all!

Description: Located along the Great Miami River in the heart of Downtown, the park is open 365 days a year and is just a short bike ride away from campus. Year round there are activities for all ages from concerts, community events, river rentals, and ice skating. From November to February, enjoy outdoor ice skating next to the river. Skating is open daily, and Monday through Thursdays, there is no admission charge. While the rink is open, enjoy a delicious hot chocolate from the Silver Fern Café. If its warm, rent a bike from the RecPlex and ride downtown to enjoy the events and the beautiful waterfront of the Great Miami. Grab some friends and check out all that RiverScape has to offer!

A Night of Art

Introduction: The Perfect Non-Traditional First Date

Description: A great way to see what the city of Dayton has to offer while avoiding the stereotypical first date. Start off by driving to the Dayton Art Institute and enjoying their extensive collection of art from around the world including many famous European and American artists. Admission is free with a student ID. Hours are from 11am-8pm Tuesday-Friday, 10am-5pm Saturdays, 12-5pm Sundays. Next head to the Oregon District for dinner at one of many tasty and unique restaurants. After dinner take a walk through the Oregon District and browse the numerous galleries and eclectic shops featuring local and regional art.

Hills and Dales Nature Escape

Introduction: If you don’t have a lot of time but you need some nature in your life

Description: Take a run, bike, or drive the 2.5 miles over to Hills and Dales MetroPark. Hills and Dales is 63 acres and offers over 2 miles of beautiful wooded hiking trails, a boardwalk through wetlands, and green space for Frisbee or throwing around a ball. Don’t forget to stop and check out the historical monuments and landscape sculpture.

Bike to Island Metropark for a Picnic

Introduction: Enjoy warm weather and food just outside of downtown

Description: Meet in front of the Recplex with your bike or rent a bike from the Equipment Issuance Desk. From there, students will ride to the Great Miami River Bikeway and head north towards downtown along the river. A picnic will be set up for the students at Island Metropark where rest and food will help students prepare for the bike ride back to campus.

Mountain Biking at Huffman Metropark

Introduction: A gripping adventure through a wooded mountain biking course

Description: If you’re the type of person that enjoys biking through evergreen forests, up and down rocky paths, and weaving through shallow creeks, you have found your expedition! This 8 mile mountain biking course is only an hour car ride (and one hour bike ride) away. The best way to get you and yourself to Huffman Metropark is by packing your bike on a bike rack. Because the trails are hilly it is best for your bike to have suspensions installed within. Make sure to bring a helmet and a water bottle. Enjoy yourself!
