Fourth Annual Professional Speaker Days - October 12 & 13, 2017

The two-day event culminated in a plenary session featuring a keynote address by John Nersesian, CFP®, CIMA®, CIS, CPWA®, Senior Managing Director of Wealth Management Services at Nuveen in Chicago. An experienced financial advisor to corporate executives, affluent families and non-profit organizations, Mr. Nersesian was a First Vice President of Merrill Lynch Private Client Group prior to joining Nuveen Investments. While at Merrill Lynch he was also a leader of Advanced Training for Financial Consultants, providing training in comprehensive wealth management strategies and business development practices. Mr. Nersesian is a faculty member for the IMCA Certified Private Wealth Advisor Program.

UD President, Dr. Eric Spina, introduced John Nersesian, who spoke at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13, in Boll Theatre on the first floor of Kennedy Union. In "Behavioral Finance:  Money Over Mind," Mr. Nersesian addressed the concept and types of behavioral biases, identified emotional investor behavior, and provided approaches to mitigating negative effects on returns. He went beyond the basics, outlining situations to look out for, and providing specific planning tools and processes to counteract various behaviors.

Earlier in the week, Dr. Trevor Collier hosted a Professional Speaker Day return visit from Mr. Grant Reed, Senior Analytical Consultant at McGohan Brabender. Last year, Mr. Reed managed to make the topic of the Affordable Care Act both informative and entertaining to an auditorium-sized group of students, and accomplished the same feat in both of Dr. Collier's Public Finance classes. Mr. Reed is very passionate about the topic, having even submitted a proposal to the legislature that merited review by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services at President Trump's request.

Dr. Marlon Williams' participation in Professional Speaker Days took the form of a robust debate a few weeks later on November 16. O'Leary Auditorium was jam-packed with students anxious to hear guest debaters face off regarding "The Im/Morality of Capitalism: Is there a viable, morally superior alternative to capitalism?"

Professional Speaker Days is recognized as an official University of Dayton R.I.S.E. Program.
