Profile

Piper C. Mitchell, Esq. has over thirteen (13) years of professional experience as a practicing attorney and high-level administrator, primarily in the higher education and sports and entertainment sectors. In November 2021, Ms. Mitchell became Director of Human Resources, Staff and Labor Relations at her alma mater Duke University. Prior to returning to Duke, Ms. Mitchell served as Assistant University Legal Counsel for North Carolina Central University. In this capacity, she handled legal issues for the university, to include employee relations matters; litigation matters; contract review and negotiations; policy development; governance; and compliance. She also provided advice and counsel to university stakeholders on a variety of subject areas, including employment and human resource matters; ADA and disability matters; investigations; grievances and grievance hearings; diversity and inclusion matters; Title IX and other matters before the Office for Civil Rights; athletics; strategic initiatives; and university planning, management and operations.

Prior to returning to North Carolina, Ms. Mitchell served as Associate General Counsel for Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia. In this role, she served as the lead attorney for the organization’s Sports and Entertainment Division and was responsible for providing legal guidance and business support to the administrative, operational and project staff on matters including sports and entertainment initiatives, hospitality, real estate development, communications and media, contracts, compliance, intellectual property and local and federal regulations. She also conducted training sessions with staff and counseled, advised and interfaced with various members of the organization, to include the CEO, the Senior Vice President for Sports and Entertainment, the Board of Directors, senior-level executives, outside counsel and government officials.

Prior to joining Events DC, she served as Associate General Counsel for Student and Faculty Affairs at Howard University, where she began her professional legal career. During her six (6) year in-house tenure at Howard, Ms. Mitchell managed the legal affairs of the institution on matters involving faculty, staff and students; represented the University in legal proceedings; counseled administrators on a broad range of areas including student and faculty affairs, labor and employment law, athletics, intellectual property, compliance, employee relations, policy development and corporate governance; and conducted numerous confidential fact-finding investigations. She also served as the university’s Title IX Coordinator, Interim Senior Associate Athletics Director and Special Counsel to the President during her tenure.

Ms. Mitchell is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and the District of Columbia and is an active member of the American Bar Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Society for Human Resource Management. She is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. In addition to teaching at Dayton, she also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and North Carolina Central University. In her free time, Ms. Mitchell enjoys reading, swimming, travelling and weekend fun with her husband and two sons, Clinton, II and Merrick.
