Tim Osborn
Group Leader, Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer
University of Dayton Research Institute: Structural Materials
Tim H. Osborn, Ph.D. is the Additive Manufacturing Technology Development (AMTD) group lead and research engineer: specializing in the development of novel materials and technologies for additive and laser manufacturing processes spanning metals, polymers, and composites. He has expertise in: AM process-property relationships, material property engineering, AM machine innovation, materials characterization, and testing of AM parts covering processes from fused deposition modeling (FDM), digital light processing (DLP), and laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Tim leads a research group of 20+ highly skilled, full–time researchers, in collaboration with faculty and students. He enjoys building and managing multi-disciplinary research programs to solve hard problems. His group designs, builds, and operates their own open architecture LPBF and ultrafast laser manufacturing systems complete with in-situ sensor and analysis tools. Additionally, his group works with industry partners to develop/deliver AM printable materials for advanced polymer applications. Tim is currently the Principle Investigator for a metallic additive manufacturing program seeking to understand the effects of advanced laser processing techniques on material properties and performance.
