UD Gifts Created By UD Students

From UD home decor to playing cards and even apparel lines, entrepreneurship studies looked for a need on campus and tried to fill the void.

These companies are part of the Management 220/221 class, the first course in the entrepreneurship major. In this class, students create teams and launch a micro company funded by the University in a high-reward, low-risk environment that will teach students essential skills like researching the financial viability of business ventures, market needs, and marshaling the resources to start the business.

This experiential learning opportunity lasts an entire academic year, though students are encouraged to continue their company after the course ends. At the end of the year, students pay back the original investment, split the profits among the team's members, and give a portion to a social venture of their choice.

Some of these student companies were created due to the market demand of students, like Angelina Moir (Entrepreneurship '26), who created The Pickled Flyers, a flyer-inspired pickleball paddle, after learning that UD recently developed a pickleball club that was growing rapidly. Others, like Estelle Hermann (Marketing & Entrepreneurship '26), creator of Forever Homes, came up with her company's unique sketch designs of the Chapel and UD student neighborhood houses, so students and alumni can always take a piece of UD with them.

"I love using my creativity and watching my ideas come to life. I also really enjoy the endless possibilities and creative thinking that come with entrepreneurship. " says Jacob Rider (Marketing & Entrepreneurship '26), the creator of Flyer Caps. Jacob is thankful for the experiences he is gaining in the microbusiness course. "It has been a great experience being part of the Dayton entrepreneurship school and launching Flyer Caps. I am very thankful for the great program that Dayton has to offer. "

The student microbusinesses will continue into the spring of 2024, focusing on growing and running their micro-business with planned liquidation by the end of the academic year.
