Alumni and Friends Making an Impact

Forever Grateful

By Brooke Owens

Donor Appreciation Week is when we come together to express our gratitude for the generous individuals who make our experience at the University of Dayton possible.

As philanthropy chair of Students for University Advancement, I have had the privilege of witnessing donors’ tremendous impact on our community. This position has given me the honor of experiencing what it truly means to be a Flyer, even after graduation. Being a junior this year, I’ve struggled to accept that I am halfway through my time of getting to call this place home. Through SUA, I’ve engaged with alumni and learned that graduating doesn’t have to be the end of my UD experience. Our alumni have taught me that we are all Flyers forever.

The University of Dayton is built around the word “community.” Community and philanthropy go hand in hand. The philanthropic efforts of our donors are the foundation of the community here at UD, and Donor Appreciation Week acts as a reminder of the interconnectedness. It’s not just about financial support; it’s about building a network of individuals who share the common goal of making the University of Dayton the best it can be. Donors are an integral part of our family, and this week is dedicated to celebrating and showing gratitude for their impact.

While financial contributions are essential, Donor Appreciation Week emphasizes the emotional and personal connections that donors endow upon this institution. It’s a chance for students to share their stories about how the support of donors has directly affected their lives. These stories paint a vivid picture of the impact of their generosity, going beyond statistics. The contributions of donors aid students at the University of Dayton by providing them with countless opportunities. They are what makes being a Flyer so special, and that's why this week is all about them.

I am so lucky to be able to serve as philanthropy chair and gain an understanding of why it is crucial to give back to this institution that has provided me with so many unforgettable experiences and opportunities. Being in Students for University Advancement, I’ve learned a lot about establishing student-alumni relationships and the importance of philanthropy. The highlight of my position is building relationships with alumni and donors. I’m looking forward to Donor Appreciation Week to show my utmost gratitude to the donors who help students like me soar.

Donor Appreciation Week is a time to celebrate the spirit of giving that makes our community stronger and more vibrant. I highly urge everyone to take the time to write a quick thank you note to a donor. Your gratitude is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed.
