Flyer Promise Alum Guides the Next Generation of Students

Cameron Nowlin ’22 found his vocation because of the Flyer Promise Scholars program and gives back to UD because of what the University did for him.

He currently works for the University of Cincinnati as a success coach, helping students achieve academic success, personal well-being, financial literacy and a sense of belonging on campus.

The Cincinnati native was a first-gen college student, and attending UD was always a second thought because of the financial barrier. Even after experiencing campus, Nowlin was hesitant to enroll at UD. But because of Flyer Promise, which creates more accessibility for academically talented students from underserved backgrounds, Nowlin chose to be a Flyer.

“It ended up being the best decision and the right decision,” Nowlin said.

While on campus, Nowlin got involved with the Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center and Alpha Psi Lambda, UD’s Latino fraternity.

The Flyer Promise scholar took the initiative to become the first president of FOLX, a community for people of color who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“The idea of FOLX was really to be a bridge for people of color who didn’t feel comfortable in Spectrum (UD’s student organization for LGBTQ+ and allies) and for LGBTQ+ folks who didn’t feel comfortable in MEC,” Nowlin said.

His career has taken him full circle as he now advocates for students the same way he was supported at UD.

“The support I received from Flyer Promise and UD faculty and staff was so tremendous to my success,” Nowlin said. “It ended up being the reason why I was able to graduate.”

Nowlin also provides guidance and enthusiasm to current Flyers, alumni, prospective students and administration as a day10 executive committee member and as the chapter director of his former fraternity, APsi.

“It’s important for me to participate as much as possible and to make sure that people from all backgrounds are being represented [on day10] to support all students,” he said.

Through his UD experience, the day10 committee member learned and proved that he was enough after walking across the graduation stage. He credits UD’s environment for his success.

“If it weren’t for the faculty and staff and Flyer Promise, I may not have ever gotten a college degree,” Nowlin said. “UD was a perfect environment that allowed me to thrive.”

To Research and Beyond

Undergraduate student research experiences at UD can include conducting research over the summer and completing an honors thesis. Katie Hoener did both, which led to something bigger — authoring a textbook chapter with her mentor, Li-Yin Liu.
