Skills for a Lifetime

In the Marian Library, experiential learning is built into student employees’ work so that they can build professional skills, practice customer service, discover their interests and talents and experience a variety of work environments. Here, Marian Library student employees reflect on the work they do and the enduring lessons they’re taking from it.

Major: History

I began working in the Marian Library in 2022 and have loved every second of it! Working here has given me the opportunity to work on my communication, organizational and time management skills. I’ve worked on projects that I never thought I would be able to and have learned so much from them. The Marian Library has also allowed me to connect more with my faith and with the people around me. I’m so grateful for all I’ve learned while working at the Marian Library and hope to continue learning more in the future.

I’ve worked at the Marian Library since 2021 and have gained a lot of skills over the years. I have learned how to be more flexible and organized with my work, as well as greatly improved my communication skills. Working here has made me realize how important it is to have a supervisor that is kind, patient and overall just nice to work with. This type of employer is who I hope I’ll be working for in future career opportunities. Overall, I’ve learned many adaptable skills and have enjoyed working here.

Major: Communication

I started working at the Marian Library in 2023. Being here briefly, I have gained and continued working on skills like communication, organization and time management. I have learned more about my faith and reconnected with it. Working here, I have come out of my shell more by interacting with students, professors and patrons who come in to visit. The skills I continue to learn in the Marian Library will benefit me in other jobs and future careers.

I have worked in the Marian Library since 2022. With my employment in the library, I have been able to further strengthen my communication and organizational skills while working alongside fellow staff members. It has allowed me to discover what traits I especially value in other co-workers, guiding me to be the best co-worker/team member I can be for others. In addition, as an employee in the library, I have had the opportunity to take part in professional development workshops. These workshops have covered numerous topics in which I have had the opportunity to enrich my knowledge and skills both in the library and for my future profession in the health care field.
