From the Marian Treasure Chest

Brother John M. Samaha, S.M., sent us the text below with the following comments: "A note about Christopher Columbus"

Columbus and Mary by Brother John M. Samaha, S.M.

Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain in 1492 on the feast of Our Lady of Angels to demonstrate that the world is round. Admiral Columbus commanded a fleet of three ships. He sailed on the flagship, the Santa Maria, whose full name was St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception.

Each evening, at his directive, the crews on all three ships sang the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen), the liturgical night prayer hymn.

The sailing party first sighted land on the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, a national patroness of Spain, on October 12. Columbus named that piece of land San Salvador Island. The second island he discovered he named Santa Maria de la Concepcion.

Pope Francis prays in Armenian Apostolic Cathedral (Vatican Radio) June 24, 2016

Pope Francis prayed in the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral of the Holy Etchmiadzin on Friday at the start of his fourteenth Apostolic Journey abroad. He prayed together with His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch-Catholicos of All Armenia and a select group of around one-hundred other dignitaries....

Dear brothers and sisters, when our actions are prompted by the power of Christ's love, understanding and reciprocal esteem grow, a fruitful ecumenical journey becomes possible, and all people of goodwill, and society as a whole, are shown a concrete way to harmonize the conflicts that rend civil life and create divisions that prove hard to heal. May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of Mary Most Holy, Saint Gregory the Illuminator, "pillar of light for the Holy Church of the Armenians," and Saint Gregory of Narek, Doctor of the Church, bless all of you and the entire Armenian nation. May He preserve you always in the faith you received from your ancestors, and to which you have borne glorious witness throughout the ages.
