Lamps Shining in the Night

By Eric F. Spina

("Let our celebration of Easter renew our faith in the healing power of light over darkness. Let us be a community that walks by faith, lighting the way for our world," University of Dayton President Eric Spina writes in an Easter message to the campus community.)

Dear University of Dayton Family,

As another joyous Easter dawns, I find myself pondering the Biblical verse, “we walk by faith, not by sight,” a favorite axis of reflection for Father Jim Fitz, S.M., our vice president for mission and rector.

Sometimes in our faith journey, the light of Christ is like the morning sun, brightly lighting our path. At other times, during the senseless tragedy of war and violence, the light is a flicker showing us no more than the next step. We must be, as Pope Francis reminds us, “lamps shining in the night.”

On this Easter, Karen and I wish you and your families the faith and hope that’s embodied in the Resurrection. We extend happiness to our Jewish brothers and sisters who will celebrate Passover in a few weeks and blessings to our Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan.

Let our celebration of Easter renew our faith in the healing power of light over darkness. Let us be a community that walks by faith, lighting the way for our world.

Wishing you God’s grace,

Eric F. Spina
President
