Philosophy

Core/Philosophy + JD Program

Core students who major in philosophy are now eligible to apply to a program that allows driven, high achieving students the capacity to matriculate directly into the University of Dayton School of Law after completing three years of undergraduate work at UD.

Thanks to the Core Program’s efficient but rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum and the Department of Philosophy’s substantial presence in the CAP program, students can complete all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in three years, without taking more than 18 hours per semester. The remaining 20 semester hours of electives needed for the B.A. will be completed during students’ first year of law school. First year law school classes will double count towards the B.A. and the J.D. so that students will earn their B.A. by the end of their first year of law school.

  • Law school credits apply towards students’ undergraduate degree only when students pass their law classes.
  • To pass a UDLS class, students must receive a 2.0 or higher.
  • Grades for law school classes will appear on their transcript as a “K.”
  • Law school grades will not be included in students’ undergraduate grade point average.

Incentives for this program include:

  • Reduced undergraduate tuition, thanks to the accelerated B.A. program. (Students are still eligible for financial aid at UD).
  • A minimum $10,000 scholarship per academic year of law school.
  • Waiver of law school application fees. (Students will need to pay the LSAT or GRE and CAS fees.)
  • Conditional acceptance to law school when entering UD as a Core and philosophy student.
  • Knowing required LSAT score when entering the program as a first year undergraduate.
  • Advisors to assist you in the mapping out of your courses.
  • The possibility to opt out of the program at any point without repercussion.

  • Students must enter UD as a Core student and declare a philosophy major by the end of the fall semester of their second year.
  • At the time of application to the UDSL, the student must have a cumulative
undergraduate GPA of 3.6 or higher and maintain that minimum prior to
beginning UDSL courses. Students will take LSAT during the fall semester of their third year at UD.
  • Students must submit a J.D. application in their third year to meet ABA requirements.
  • First year of law school (1L) must satisfy both fourth year undergrad requirements and the first year of law school.
  • Students must earn their undergraduate degree before beginning the second year of law school (2L).
